The first thing you need to do is secure your kayaks. If you can’t use cam straps, use rope instead. Make sure the rope is not stretchy and water resistant. You’ll also need to learn how to use a trucker’s hitch. After you secure your kayaks, drive about 15 minutes and check them again. Sometimes, the kayak straps can come loose during driving, so check your load after 15 minutes.
Stacking kayaks
If you’re an avid kayaker, you probably know how difficult it can be to store and transport your favorite craft. One way to solve this problem is to use stacker bars to store multiple kayaks side by side. These bars are typically used for whitewater kayaks, but they can be used for recreational and touring kayaks as well. First, you need to make sure that your kayaks are centered between the crossbars of the car. Then, you need to position a cam strap above one of the crossbars and then throw it over the other kayak.
Once you’ve secured your second kayak, you can move to the third and fourth kayaks. Ideally, you’ll want to center your third kayak so that it can be stored on top of the first. However, there are exceptions, like if you’re carrying two kayaks side by side. And if you’re using a J-style carrier, then you’ll want to place them closer together. Once you’ve secured the third kayak, you’ll need to secure it with the front and rear tie-downs.
If you’re unsure of how to secure your kayak on the roof of your car, you can use a pool noodle as a mounting platform. These are thick, heavy plastic pieces that are wide enough to cover the roof of your car. You should also use ratchet straps to secure the kayak in place. You can find these at automotive stores, hardware stores, or online. They are made of hard nylon and can be easily purchased at any hardware or online store. Just make sure to buy two straps to securely hold your kayak in place.
To attach a kayak to a car, first loop the strap under the crossbars. Then loop the other end of the strap under the crossbars. Make sure to loop the strap under the crossbars to prevent the kayaks from sliding down the side rails. Then, attach your kayak to the other side of the car. If you’re unsure about whether or not you need a bow and stern strap, you can simply attach them to the bumpers.
Using a j-cradle
I’m going to demonstrate how to use a j-cradle to carry four kayaks on my equinox. First, you’ll want to strap your kayaks onto the roof rack. Using cam straps is the easiest method, and it requires two people to lift the kayaks. Then, you’ll want to position the kayaks so that their weight is evenly distributed from front to back and side to side. To prevent the kayaks from shifting while driving, it is also important to secure them with the built-in roof rack.
The cradle positions your kayak on a side, making it easier to load and unload. It keeps plastic kayaks from warping. This is an excellent option if you want to transport more than two kayaks. The cradles are made of padded bars in the shape of a J and are perfect for transporting more than one kayak at a time.
When loading your kayak, you can either use a j-cradle or another type of rack for the purpose. A j-cradle allows you to stack multiple kayaks side-by-side on the rack. This method is best suited for whitewater kayaks, but it can be used for recreational or touring kayaks as well.
Another option is a foam block carrier. Although it is not as safe as a roof rack, foam block carriers are more suitable for emergency situations. In addition to that, these are not as durable as roof racks, and are only useful in emergencies. This way, you can transport up to four kayaks without a roof rack. You can use the roof rack as a spare, but this is not recommended.
Using a set of good quality saddles
Using a set of good quality saddle to transport four kayaks on top of my SUV is a great way to transport your kayaks in style and protect them from damage. Kayak saddles can be purchased from various vendors, including Malone. These racks are shaped like bird wings, and they fit securely around each kayak’s front and back. Each saddle features an adjustable cross rail, which allows you to adjust the height of the kayak to suit the rack.
When storing and transporting four kayaks on top of your SUV, you should use the best possible roof rack system for the job. Saddle style carriers provide a secure base for the hull of the kayak, and their wider surface area can increase boat security and aerodynamics. However, some saddles require crossbars that you must install on your roof rack.
Using a roof rack
Using a roof rack to transport four large kayaks on my Equinox is a great way to protect them and make them easier to carry. I used a balancefrom puzzle interlocking EVA foam tiles to evenly distribute the weight on the roof. I secured these tiles to the crossbars with straps. I also loaded my kayak on top of a foam mattress, then strapped the rack to it.
Besides using roof racks to carry kayaks, the vehicle also needs to have crossbars for securing the four kayaks on the rack. If you are using a temporary roof rack, you may want to try a temporary pad first. If your car has crossbars, this method will work best. If you don’t have them yet, you can purchase a roof rack that has two crossbars and two side rails.
If you’re using a tie-down strap, make sure it is properly wrapped around the crossbars. It should not flap in the wind. To ensure a tight fit, you can adjust the straps. Once the kayaks are secured, make sure the tie-down straps are securely tied. If you’re using the tie-down straps for the first time, make sure to double check the kayak placement.

Using a kayak trailer
One of the most convenient ways to transport kayaks is using a kayak trailer. Kayak trailers are usually equipped with wheels from 8 to 12 inches in diameter. This gives you a little more ground clearance and allows you to bring larger kayaks. But be careful: some kayak trailers are rusty or have undersized tires. You’ll need to be aware of the trailer’s maximum weight and dimensions before you buy it.
While it may be tempting to load a couple of kayaks on the back of a pickup truck, a kayak trailer can make the process more convenient. You won’t have to lift them off the trailer. In addition, you won’t have to worry about reversing, braking distances, or wind resistance. Moreover, you’ll be able to get your kayaks off the trailer easily.
There are several ways to secure your kayaks to your vehicle’s roof rack. For example, if your vehicle does not have roof racks, a roof rack made for kayaks is most secure and stable. A side rail roof rack, on the other hand, will require crossbars. There are a number of different types of kayak attachments, so you’ll want to select the right one for your kayaks.
One of the most important considerations when buying a kayak trailer is the size of the vehicle’s bed. A kayak is over nine feet long and most pickup beds have no more than eight feet. A truck bed should be large enough to accommodate a kayak. Make sure to put a red flag on the kayak to warn drivers of an overhang. You can also use a roof rack with adequate tie-downs to secure your kayaks.
